Given the most straightforward lyrics for a relatively short song, I immediately thought about the idea of a soldier/marine (of no particular country or faction) traversing the battlefield, only to be confronted with the air superiority of the enemy, hence the title "Death From Above". I imagine that at some point early on in the song, the trooper was the last one of his detail to survive the first wave of the aerial attack, hence why he describes himself being alone, "soaked in blood".

However, a secondary perspective would be how those who got caught, but survived the blast from a nuclear bomb would feel, with everyone next to them having died, or even been vaporized. This interpretation would make this description applicable to not only military members, but also to those unfortunate enough to be civilians affected by the blast.

A more remotely related viewpoint would be to take the lyrics as metaphors for the protagonist's feelings of isolation and dread, hoping that his savior would come from some sort of divinity, only to be let down by their ambivalence, or even their malevolent nature, leaving the protagonist to die or suffer a horrible existence.
