My thoughts on this song are, in a broad sense, despairing over constant tragedy. I think it's referring to the loss of a loved one and the overwhelming depression it brings, but it could be interpreted as something like war. How long is the night --> "the night" referring to the deep depression of loss or struggle.
"But the day looked so bright in the photo albums that you gave me" --> there was a time before this constant despair that things were nice, and Geoff holds on to that as a means to keep going.
