I think this song is about a sense of feelings like a stranger, and longing for something you know you'll never have. I know the song was written after the writers went to vegas. The way i see it, when the writers talk about the sense of life being a gamble, and how the neon and bright colours of vegas- the chances and the opportunities you get when you're someplace new, are brighter than the sun- much more alluring and tempting than the chances and risks of everyday life. Yet, the character telling the story is ultimately stuck, thinking the world is full of chances for her them just to find out the boy she wishes to love doesn't love her back. The way i see it, it's a song about wanting to live a delusion, just to eventually wake up to what reality is. It's sad, it's beautiful and I really like it.
I mean, i could be saying nonsense, but that's my two cents on it.
