Enemies Lyrics

I took it as an inner demon type battle song. Almost as if he’s dividing all his core personalities up into 21 versions of himself. Let’s say love/honesty, fun/enjoyment, proud/indulgent, angry/reasonable, scared/fearless and so on…then there’s one that founds its way into his core makeup, one that’s dark and possibly a byproduct of addiction, fame, depression or any number of personas none of us would want.

Regardless of how they’re broken up or which version is in control that one dark version is becoming core and slowly growing in an effort to replace all he is.

Obviously he wants to destroy that worthless part of himself. 20 to 1 is sort of a play on words since it’s often said in betting or in casual conversations. I visualize 20 little Brent’s all circling 1 in his brain, and they’re all ready to pounce. He’s got 20 versions of himself that truly define who he is and they like their odds. 20 wind and his life and mental state are good. However, if the 1 wins it would multiply 20 for every one, ultimately controlling every aspect of his life and mind.

He’s prepared and believes all the best parts of himself will defeat the dark part, allowing him to be the best version of himself. However, he knows there’s a chance the 1 wins, and that would cripple his mind and core traits.

I’m probably not right, but I’ve felt like what I wrote many times. I know there are a lot of good traits in me and they outweigh the bad, but the dark is so persistent and finds a way to take control making me forget who I am underneath it all. I’m fighting it now.

I enjoyed everyone’s interpretation, the one mentioning the Devil, interesting. I could see that too.
