We meet Annie at 12 yrs old and learn her life is going to get a lot worse over the next 2 years.
Why?
Because when Annie was 12, her mother either died or ran off.
We know Annie's mother never told her that prostitution is "the wrong way", so it's likely Annie's mother was on the street to support the family, too.
The narrator meets & hires Annie at 14. Although he portrays himself as a "good guy" trying to "save her", he's no hero. He's preying on a child.
She agrees to go with him to escape her family, but she takes the opportunity to escape HIM, TOO.
He ASSUMES she's returning to her father & prostitution, because "nobody ever told her it's the wrong way" but no one HAD TO tell her it's wrong.
But she's smarter than he realizes. She figured out that she didn't want to be used - my him OR her father.
