I'm sure everyone is right that this about suicide or maybe just depression, but it sure seems like it could be about sin and sin's relationship to the eternal. The chorus really implies such to me at least.
It also seems like it could be political, especially in "An abyss that laughs at creation, A circus complete with all fools, Foundations that lasted the ages, Then ripped apart at their roots." Those lines could certainly be interpreted as discussing the degradation of civilization institutions.
