The producers of this song perpetrated a lyrical fraud! I think the original lyrics are “Donna,” not “Darling,” and is sung from a man’s point of view regarding his “pretty baby” working overtime on her job instead of loving him at home.

They wanted the song to be gender neutral but they thought, as I do, that Donna sounds better than darling on the recording (who’d really notice?), so they sang “Donna” while making “darling” the official lyric. Of course they overlooked that the ensuing lyrical description, “pretty baby,” makes it gender specific for a woman named Donna.

Just my two cents. 😉
