This song is clearly about heroin addiction to me. He WAS already addicted as he was in house arrest and all his troubles with the law were always drugs related over and over.
Forward yesterday, makes me want to stay sounds like he wants to just skip to being healthy as the withdrawal part is excruciatingly painful, « makes me want to stay » is either in detox or where he is now, probably high and feeling good, thinking of the hell he has to go through coming.
I believe he most likely changed the lyrics from « Take time with a wounded hand 'cause it likes to heal
Take time with a wounded hand 'cause I like the STEEL » to « I like to steal » because he had to wear gloves to cover track marks, he uses his hands to shoot us and it’s a sickness, an addiction, he needs to heal, but he likes the steel (needles are made of surgical steel).
He feels sad depressed and rocking himself in the dark as heroin addicts love in shadows, isolated, ashamed alone and always sick often wrapping arms around themselves in pain, they sweat shake and have terrible stomach pains, they curl up in balls.
He used to be a tall strong proud football player, an athlete. Now he is a sick skinny junkie failing his friends family and bandmates. He isn’t proud.
He feels small, like a little mouse, with a big problem. Hiding like a mouse to hide and seek heroin in the darkest areas of every city. Junkies are seen as vermin, u wanted ppl, squatting in abandoned houses. Eating garbage. Stealing. Like rats and mice
I think the analogy about feeling uninspired and wanting to start a fire is him feeling depressed and bored, deciding to party once again, a destructive party, like setting a house on fire and watching it burn down. He self destroys
The loaded gun is the loaded seringue, he could die from it at every time he shoots up
Lyrics are like poetry and have deeper meaning
When you study littérature and poetry you learn to write and read differently and that’s what a lot of songs are written like
It’s not the message ppl understand it’s the analogies of what they lived and felt
The messages in the meaning not the words
Not sure who the neat girl is but he must feel not good enough being a junkie and told off when approaching girls
Maybe one he really liked, maybe Mary while he was still married to his first wife but was chasing her
Friends don’t mean a thing because they can’t help him it has to come from him and he has to want to be sober and do his work in rehab
It was always very clear to me hearing the song that he was destroyed and feeling low and not proud about his heroin addiction and the problems he was already dealing with and singing about it
He was already feeling like he had lost himself and was half the man he used to be. Even tho he was so handsome and so talented, his career rising… he was sinking in drug addiction
Sad
I loved him
