I’ve never really been an Elvis fan before, but I heard this song & I was hooked. I’m a sucker for sad love songs & this is one of the best. I’m surprised it was written by Eddie Rabbit, since I haven’t heard many other songs written by him, What makes the song so great is the imagery & Elvis’ wonderful interpretation. The song features a desperate, lovelorn man trudging through a heavy rainstorm on foot trying to find the wife, girlfriend or lover who suddenly disappeared without explanation, The singer wants to know what she’s running to or from & wants to bring his love back home. He encounters some old men outside a general store who say they saw her a couple of days ago. I suspect he’s on foot (his shoes are soaking wet) because his love took the car, and yet he persists on foot trying to find her for an entire week. It’s clear that he’s desperately in love with her & will stop at nothing to find her. His interpretation of the song is so vulnerable that it makes the song truly heartbreaking. In fact, I can’t listen to it without crying. It’s not one of Elvis’ greatest hits, but I think it’s one of his best songs. The interpretation is truly heartfelt.
