Surprised I don't see this interpretation on here but this is what I think whenever I hear the song:
The girl in the song is a lesbian but hasn't realized it yet. She is very close with the boy who is the perspective we are following. She knows something isn't working out, maybe even know she doesn't like men but isn't ready to face it. She acknowledges that if she were "normal" he would be the perfect guy for her but she just doesn't feel it and she doesn't know why yet. She picks "all the wrong guys" because she doesn't want to hurt her friend when she knows deep down even though they seem like they would be the perfect couple, it will never work for her.
(I had the opposite situation where I was in love with a close friend who I had everything in common with but he just could never love me that way. Turns out it is cus he is gay. Eventually he realized this and told me. We are still best friends to this day. I consider him my brother. I like to think that the people in the song finally figure it out too and can be good friends without the heartache. They both get nice girlfriends and they all hangout together.
