As someone in recovery for addiction, I see this totally differently. I can now see it as the story of someone who grows up with all the opportunity in the world in front of them, but goes exploring with drugs and alcohol, and finds themself in a cage of torment. The sick addicts around them have forgotten what real life is, but The Beast has not. He tries to convince some to come with him to get back to that life, but eventually leaves them behind to get clean, and gets back to the Golden Life of sobriety
