This is a curious song. It seems to be addressed to someone and yet it’s also about Dio who’s trapped in this darkness.
Read the first part of the poem:
When there's lightning,
You know, it always bring me down.
Cause it's free and I see that it's me,
Who's lost and never found.
I cry out for magic.
I feel it dancing in the light.
It was cold,
Lost my hold - to the shadows of the night!
But here he says:
No sign of the morning coming...
You've been left on your own,
Like a Rainbow in the Dark!
A Rainbow in the Dark!
Has this person been left behind? With Dio?
Do your demons,
Do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside
Is it someone that you know?
Who is the person that Dio is responding to that it may be somebody that you know?
When he says
You and I Are words without a rhyme,
he’s referring to the person he’s speaking to and to himself.
Strangely, the poem rhymes so how is he lost without a rhyme?
You're a picture,
You're an image caught in time.
We're a lie,
You and I, we're words without a rhyme.
