I know that a lot of the songs made back then were overly dramatic, and all who were involved with recording this song deny it...but I truly believe this song is about a girl who was raped, and it changed her forever.
It's the coldness, the deadness of her soul in her voice. When you are young and have a relationship break up it seems like the whole world has ended, but it doesn't kill your soul like being raped. Having the actual whole world compartmentalized to Past, Present & Future. She's scared, scared to go on, scared to take any chances, where she used to be open.
