Most of the comments on here are older than I am but I'll put in my own interpretation. I think the song is about someone who loves someone else, but the person doesn't love them back. They sleep to fantasize about a reality where the person loves them back and to avoid the pain.
I can relate to this because I love my girlfriend but I know she doesn't give a fuck about me. The only time I can receive myself of the pain is when I sleep. Even though I've only found this song a month ago and I'm about two and a half decades late, this song means so much to me and when I hear it I can't help but tear up.
