Cover art for Uneven Odds lyrics by Sleeping At Last

I think this song is about a child whose mother died giving birth to them. The father struggles with feelings of grief, anger, and forgiveness, having lost the love of his life. He still loves his son/daughter, but just can't get over these feelings every time he sees them. So he entrusts a close friend with their care, instructing them to give them the love he can't fully give.

As the child grows older it's explained to them what happened to their mother, but they're still too young to fully understand. The guardian (narrator) thinks despite the tragic death of the mother, a person with a life full of memories and hopes and dreams, the new life of this innocent child is a light in the darkness. Something beautiful that comes out of this tragedy, even if they're uneven odds.

As the years go on, the son/daughter gains the emotional maturity to understand the gravity of what happened, perhaps why their father is distant or resentful, or not even a part of their life.

Even though they were only a newborn baby, they will never forget that was the moment the weight of the world was unfairly placed on their shoulders. They feel the responsibility to live a life worthy of their mother, to make up for her loss.
