Among people who don't know each other that well it is (or was) considered polite to keep your conversations confined to simple subjects that didn't carry a lot of emotional or intellectual weight. Some people, including myself and (apparently) Johnette aren't very good at small talk for exactly the reasons she outlines in this song. When given a choice between making small talk or not saying anything, we prefer not to say anything.
