To me, the biggest mystery in this song is "what do the angels have to do in exchange for the red shoes?" What is their side of the bargain and what makes it so compelling that the narrator cannot refuse?

well he won’t get any older once the angels want to wear his red shoes! Idk if that means eternal youth or suicide but I choose eternal youth. Wrote it when he was 22. Or both! So many of his lyrics seem intentionally cryptic, i think he invites different interpretations intentionally.
