a lot of people seem to think this song is about backsabbing from friends turned foe, i think its about an abusive father or stepfather i am not familiar with jim korthe's upbringing.
This makes the lyrics make even more sense, as if i was backstabbed by a friend, i would feel betrayed, but jim states it is cold to be 'abandoned' and this also makes 'memories' more significant since youd have more memories with your father.
The biggest evidence for my claim is 'from his belt to his hands to his fist' I'm not sure about you guys but a friend has never whipped me with a belt before.
He also states 'you're not my father because you never were!'
In conclusion its pretty obvious that Jim is writing his frustrations into a song about his abuse he experienced from a fatherly figure.
