"12 Step Program" is one of Nick Lowe's several (great) songs built around drug addiction references. His most regarded is surely "The Beast in Me," as featured over the ending of a (great) Sopranos ep. Beast's metaphors aren't so on the nose there. For this reason I, like most of Sopranos' online following, had assumed it was simply about fearing loss of control over rage. That could be a "Tony's Theme from The Sopranos," perfect fit.

A bit after the Sopranos' usage, I read in a Lowe interview that "The Beast" was exploring his real like alcoholism struggle, the fears of a relapse. (He values others' interpretations and was glad the lyrics were so apropo.)

Also as dissimilar in sound from 12 Step. "...Beast" is a torchy, desperate confessional; 12 Step comes from the other side earned mastery over your pitfalls. This gets another of Lowe's (great) jig-worthy rockabilly shuffles. Dig it the most.
