The lyrics have always hit home for a multitude of reasons. I have always had a theory that the narrator telling the story doesn't know until the end and even then he his in denial that he is in fact Ed's son. As he is telling us the story he realizes he may in fact be Ed's son. Ed was telling him the story while fixing the door trying to see if his son was still in there. If he could get him to remember who he was. But he didn't not until he told us the story. If anyone really cares I have written more in depth supporting this theory.
