Lyric discussion by jessejhutchings

First, let me say how honored I am to join SongMeanings; a website that has existed for literal decades and chronicles people's thoughts on songs however whacky or correct.

A Little Bitter has fascinated me for a while now and I think everyone's speculation has been pretty reasonable. My only true input is that I think Layne and whoever else wrote the song with him fully intended the song to be interpreted several ways.

People have already mentioned drugs, father, parasitic friends, God and organized religion. For me, personally, I thought of Demri as a possible association, as well. She was a model, shared Layne's addiction, shared his friends and acquaintances, etc. Obviously, I don't know all the details of their story but I know at one point Layne was pissed about her seeing another man.

The point in the song that most strongly made me think of her was the body as a dormant altar around which infantile men lie around itching and nibbling for a small piece of sanity of which [you] cannot give. In this interpretation the infantile men would be all the men, possibly including Layne, around Demri seeking brief moment of self-worth through an act of sex or intimacy. Personally, I think those lyrics are an extremely powerful metaphor for the warmth and sanctity of the female body of a tortured woman pursued by men who can't create anything of value for themselves.

Obviously, I'm drawing on some of my own lived experiences with that interpretation but at any rate that's what Alice in Chains always intended. Find your own meaning in the song and hopefully it brings you some solace in this difficult life.
