Cover art for Funeral lyrics by Devin Townsend

It's commonly known that Dev wrote this for a in reference to a person he lost when he was young. Where I grew up, something similar happened. Three friends I'd known since elementary school were messing with a gun they didn't know was loaded and armed. One guy shot the other in the face killing him instantly. We were only 16. It was just the previous spring that the guy who got shot had wrote in my yearbook that we needed to get together over the summer. I ran into him a few times that summer and then tragically, he was killed when school started at the end of summer. It hit hard. You're not prepared at that age to deal with those things. The guy who shot him was never the same. He become hostile, defensive, very reclusive and menacing. It wasn't long after that his family moved out of the school district. But in listening to this song it's so relatable and I think I can understand the mindset that Dev was in when he wrote the song. It's been 35 years and I can still remember the shock and feeling of senselessness and loss. I can still see my friends smile. I still remember how he walked. His kind personality. He was just a cool dude. You're still remembered Dan. See you on the other side brother.
