I love this song, and have been listening to it and pondering its meaning for over 10 years. I'm going to be analyzing this stanza by stanza because I think this song has a deeper meaning than most people get from it. Before i even get into the lyrics the music itself says something as well, it has an upbeat almost energetic melody that clashes with the somewhat dark lyrics, his voice comes across as almost as anxious to me, and i think that's because this song is about his guilt towards an emotionally vulnerable woman who he took advantage of and did not treat well. The upbeat music i think represents her naivety towards him thinking he's somehow better than the other men before him who also took advantage of her, and his voice and the lyrics are him trying to warn her not to trust him, but he is unable to tell her outright that he's just as bad as the other men because he wants her to keep sleeping with him.
Somebody's gonna love you.
Somebody oughta lay you out.
Don't give it away.
Cause I need you the most
when I'm half of what I was
when I was in your room.
This stanza establishes the voices relationship with the subject of this song, a woman who he's seeing casually and likely doesn't have deep feelings for her, when they are together he pretends like he loves her, even though he just wants to have sex with her.
'Somebodys gonna love you, somebody oughta lay you out'
He feels guilty that he's lying to her, he knows that he is bad for her but he wants to keep sleeping with her. She is likely also seeing other men, the song implies possible prostitution, and him saying 'don't give it away' is him telling her not to be so easy with sex, particularly with him since he doesn't love her and isn't paying for her body.
'cause i need you the most when im half of what i was, when i was in your room"
He's tricking her into loving him, he's giving her the bare minimum of affection to get her to have sex with him and as soon as he gets it he leaves. He needs her the most when he's horny, he tells her sweet nothings; that he's half a man without her, to manipulate her into thinking he loves her so she’ll let him back into her ‘room’ i.e. her bed.
Don't pick up the phone.
Don't answer the door.
Cause those villains want your blood.
And they're gonna get it.
He's still manipulating her, perhaps telling himself that he's saying this for her own good. Telling her to stop selling herself, or to stop being so ‘easy’. To stop letting ‘villains’ sleep with her.
“Don't pick up the phone, don't answer the door”
Don't trust these men, don't trust him. He’s speaking directly to her, warning her of other men but also warning her about herself. The way he sings it sounds almost desperate, like he’s begging her to realize that he’s the one she should be avoiding.
‘Because those villains want your blood’
Blood is sex, they want her body, he wants her body. He knows that the real villain is actually himself, and when he’s only telling her this to manipulate her, it seems to her like he’s talking about the men she sleeps with for money. She feels like he's trying to protect him from them by warning her and trying to stop her from getting taken advantage of, but in reality he’s the one who is actually the villain.
‘And they’re gonna get it’
She's going to be tricked, he's going to get what he wants from her and she’ll happily give it to him. She naively thinks he’s looking out for her because he cares about her, but in actuality he’s taking full advantage of her.
Your mother is a vampire.
She sucked your old man's life away.
Turn everything off.
Just cover your neck.
Cause life is full of your regrets.
And I should be one.
So this stanza is where the voice reveals his intentions openly, he’s no longer talking to her instead these are his own thoughts when he’s with her, the demo version has an alteration on these lyrics that i think really reveal the truth behind this song, in place of the first two lines he instead says
‘I treat you like a vampire, but you never seem to mind at all’
He treats her how a vampire would, how the villains do, he just does so less conspicuously. He’s just nice enough that she never seems to ‘mind at all’. That is because this girl is emotionally damaged, she's been taken advantage of over and over again by so many men that even the slightest bit of affection is all it takes to blind her to the reality that he only wants her body. I'm not sure why they changed the lyrics here, frankly the new ones don't really fit the narrative of the song but i'll try my best to analyze it
‘Your mother is a vampire, she sucked your old man's life away’
Perhaps she had an abusive maternal figure, her mother might've been the starting point for her emotional trauma and abuse, and possibly even the reason she keeps ending up with manipulative and abusive men. Maybe she felt like it didn't matter if she was being used, she just wanted to feel some form of intimacy with another person.
‘Turn everything off, just cover your neck; cause life is full of your regrets and i should be one’
Once again he’s pleading with her to realize that he’s taking advantage of her. Telling her to just turn everything off and isolate herself so she won't continue letting men hurt her. To ‘cover her neck’ because he treats her like a vampire. He just wants her for sex, her life is full of other men exactly like him, her regrets. And he knows he should be one but he won't say that to her because even though he feels guilty about it, it's not enough to overpower his lust for her.
Try telling me off.
Try slamming the door
and telling me I'm not worth your time.
Or the breath I'm breathing.
He's still in his head here, the guilty part of his mind is pleading with her to tell him off, to slam the door in his face. To tell him that he isn't worth her time or even his own breath. He wants her to break up with him. He wants her to tell him what he's been telling himself throughout the song. He wants her to realize on her own that he's a bad person, because he likes having sex with her and can't bring himself to end things on his own, even though the guilt is eating him away.
Don't throw it away.
Oh, Calico queen.
Cause now you're merely a machine,
And not a person.
He's finally realized exactly how he sees her and how he treats her. He is a terrible lover to her, and he knows exactly what he’s doing to her. He is neglectful and doesn't treat her like a girlfriend, he treats her like a prostitute.
‘Don't throw it away. Oh, Calico queen’
I think ‘it’ is her heart, her soul. He's realizing how much damage he’s doing to her emotionally, by playing with her heart and taking advantage of her naivety in relationships. He knows that he doesn't love her but he has made her fall for him, she’s throwing her heart away to a person who doesn't cherish or even care about her. He sees her as a ‘calico queen’ , a term used for prostitutes. I think he calls her that as a nickname, perhaps she herself doesn't even know what it means and takes it as affectionate. Furthering the notion that he’s manipulating her.
‘Cause now your merely a machine, and not a person’
It's fully dawned on him that he isn't even treating her like a person, he's treating her like a machine that he can sleep with whenever he wants. Whose feelings and experiences don't matter. He doesn't and never loved her, but he pretended to, he programmed her to think that he does so she would sleep with him whenever he wanted. He no longer sees her as a person and that thought crossing his mind makes him feel like a truly evil person.
Try telling me off.
Try slamming the door
and telling me I'm not worth your time.
Or the breath I'm breathing
He’s reiterating his guilt towards how he’s treating her, after realizing that he's dehumanizing her he once again begs for her to realize that he’s evil and leave him. I'd like to imagine that this time he’s actually saying these things to her. That he’s finally coming clean about what he’s done to her and telling her that she needs to leave him.
The song ends with a loud drumline (not sure what it's called) and I think that represents the relationship finally coming to a thunderous end. The girl finally realizes that he isn't a good lover and is only using her; and hopefully leaving him because of that.
