I think the guys just thought this was a funny idea and wrote a couple of throwaway verses about the famous black private detective getting out of his comfort zone a chilly ocean away from his NYC stomping grounds. And of course he can handle any situation that may arise 'cause he's Shaft (!) - one badass mother- (shut yo' mouth!).
This song has a rockin' skankin' groove. In classic ska-punk form they go from upbeat on the verses to hard downbeat on the choruses and bridge. The horns add a lot of value and are evocative of the instrumentation of a TV theme song.
