Gee, I have no idea what this song is about. I think she sings how her boyfriend can't stand her music career because she's always far away from him, touring, performing while he stays at home and waits for her. He cannot bare this situation but she tries to explain him that music means a lot to her. So then this relationship goes to an end because her love for music wins again. Yeah, if I am really right this could be her second "Rooms on Fire" because in this song she also sings about the careerist who gives up her beloved man and even the will of having kids for she knows she was born to rock and wants to sacrifice her life for singing.
"Would you change your mind, at the very last moment
Would you say stop for a second I'll bet you could think for a minute" - I think these are his words and he tries to warn her to think about her decisions.
"She says I don't think tomorrow, baby
Sometimes I wonder if things would change if we stayed together" - yeah just like Nicks explains in some interviews: she says to a man that touring will take three months but it turns out to be six months.
"Sometimes I wonder if things would change if we stayed together" - he wonders if she could cut down on touring if she took their relationship seriously.
"And the angel said well you must have had a dream
And you remember it 'till the dream followed through
Till the end of the dream and the dream came true
When I want something I get it" - she sings how she'd dreamed about music career and then she won her dreams and now she doesn't want to give up what she's gained.
"You'd better go he says yes I think I better
Stop for a moment I think you should think for a minute" - girl, if you love music, so go away.
"not guilty have mercy!" - mental shortcuts: she doesn't feel guilty that she feels just the way she does, and she asks him to have a little sympathy and understand her music desires.
"he says you could be my prisoner
Well you're not living in the real world
You're not living in the real world" - well, I don't think he could be a swine to wish her to be finally his prisoner, I'd rather think that's how she feels in relationship - like a prisoner. And he tells her that she's not living in the real old world - for him she doesn't take life seriously for she thinks she's able to have both succesful career and relationship while things don't go so easy.
"You're not my friend you're not my love
And this is something that we really don't discuss
Where are you sometimes I hear you crying
And I wake up and I get through it" - it seems she doesn't take him as well as that relationship seriously or she understood again that it's better for her to be a free rock and roll woman. And she doesn't care about his feelings because she knows it would be better for them two to follow their own ways.
Well, maybe for somebody this song can seem to be rude but then many women needed this kind of songs (and they do even now) especially when many men before, at the same time or later focused on their careers and they didn't care about their wives, girlfriends and even children - they were even worse.
For me it's a feminist song about a girl who feels free in the world of music and no relationship is able to stop her to carry on her career that is her all life.
Well, but as I said - these are only my speculations and if someone knows the real meaning about this song please post a comment :D
