In the very beginning of the song she says that Adam represents all of humanity. For me the beginning she discusses how humanity has lost its way, and our connection with God. We focus on the ism of life, capitalism, materialism, consumerism, populism, etc. we develop vapid culture absent of honesty, love, or virtue, as the highly rewarded and favorable are those who have outward beauty and quick tongues. It goes on to portray humanity itself as the snake of the garden, as we are the ones that create the divisiveness, destruction, and chaos of the world. Humanity preys on the feeble, the weak, the naive, and knows that they are longing for purpose and understanding. We manipulate and program the naive to follow blindly into the same traps of lust and greed. Not only does this soil the individual but their love ones and curses the generations to come.
When people change for the worse they tend to live with regret and embarrassment and become lost in what to do, they know where they were before it was led them down the path of destruction but who they are now is no better. Too afraid to move, they wander blindly in the desert of plight of their own creation. So blinded by perception they never think to turn to God within for the answers, calling out to the sky and others in vain for answers, not realizing we are our own key to love and light. We must learn to be an individual , to not follow the crowd, and learn to connect truly to who we are and love ourselves and accept ourselves wholly, this is where we connect with our highest self and are able to realize God’s true intentions for our life. Life is but a lesson and we learn best with a clear mind; mediation, so that we can recover the answers from the most high, prayer.
