The song is about the oppression society, conservative society, places on women, young women in particular with regards to their sexuality and their sexuality desires and awakening.

Your growing up and maybe you're starting to show interest in sex and yourself. Quick send her away. Bible school. But maybe you learn instead:

"Said your soul needed saving so they sent you off to Bible school You learned a little more than they had heard was in the Golden Rule Be good to everybody, be a strength to the weak Be a joy to the joyful, be the laughter in the grief

And give your love freely to whoever that you please Don't let nobody tell you 'bout the who you oughtta be And when you get damned in the popular opinion It's just another damn of the damns you're not giving"

I think the crux of the song could be read here:

"All the men of the country club, the ladies of the 'xiliary Talkin' 'bout love like it's apple pie and liberty To really be a saint you gotta really be a virgin Dry as a page of the King James' version

No "ooh la las", no "oh hell yesses" No "I can't waits, I gotta see you againses" Turn the other cheek, take no chances Jesus hates your high school dances"

People are afraid sex, and of women's sex.

This song is about a young woman realizing, despite her parents best efforts, the church's, and societies... That it's okay to be sexual and enjoy that part of yourself. And maybe the real message is that we should be kinder to each other and not judge
