The original by Stephen Stills was arguably about letting go of a lost love -- moving on and not letting heartache keep you from enjoying what's right in front of you. The original could also be interpreted as cheating on your partner, but there's at least a positive interpretation.

This version by Luther Vandross removes all ambiguity. It's about cheating on your partner.

"Can't do no harm if it's only one night" "My man, go ahead" "Love will still be right here when you get home"

Once upon a time I would've found this harmless and funny. Being cheated on by someone after years together -- someone you thought was your best friend who would grow old with you -- changes things. It's not funny. It's cold, heartless hell celebrated by Luther.
