I would add after “I tried to tell the truth,” “I’ll try to tell the truth,” then “I’m trying to tell the truth.” As if he’s thinking about giving it one last try, then he’s giving it one last try.
But that’s just me, because I don’t like things to end on a downer note. Even if the downer note makes it a better song!
