STP vocalist Scott Wieland, when asked about the lyrical inspiration behind "Dead and Bloated" replied:
"It’s not really about anything. It’s just stream-of-consciousness words. I mean, at the age of 21, 22, I didn’t have a whole lot of life experiences. So it’s more about the vibe, the angst and that kind of a thing, as opposed to actual life experiences."
According to STP guitarist Dean DeLeo, the main riff was Wieland's idea:
"Scott didn't really play an instrument. When he had an idea, he would hum it to me. And 'Dead and Bloated,' was one of those things; he hummed that verse riff to me."
