When I heard this in, was that 1987 or 1988?, on the radio, it gave me a sort of ... impression ... of what this song was about.
Now, I do not know any "Italianese", yet, the voice timbre and the music, it just ... "spoke to me".
I probably am FAR off from the true meaning of the story told here, but, even with the modern technologies like telegraph and sepia (even black and white) photography around, I went looking for the translation of the song.
Yet, I end up at the same interpretation:
