This song is about a guy running off with another man's wife he's been having an affair with in the middle of the night to try and make a new life with her. "While your troubles are sleeping, we’ll be well on our way to the dawn," her troubles are her marriage/husband, i.e. leaving while her husband is asleep, driving off into the stars to get her "Freedom".

He was "Stealing the time that was yours" as in making 'time' and getting the sex that was her husband's. "But we (men) ain't quite as dumb as we seem," as her husband must have already suspected she was having an affair. During the evening before shes going to meet him, she's thinking about if she really should leave and the person in her head saying "I love you" is her husband.

The "Dealer, That dealt us the hand that we can't understand anyway" is god/nature, in that most people really don't understand their own nature, instincts and desires, which is the cause of most of their relationship problems.

In the first verses of the song, he's telling her she should not be with him for superficial reasons and she better really love him. But even as "The journey is only beginning" the stealer knows he is deceiving himself into believing that it's going to work out in the long run, because he won't be able to meet her expectations "of all of the things they said life was bringing to you." Her husband couldn't and that's part of why she sought out someone else. So he's worried she will wind up cheating on and leaving him too, thus "The lies that could slip from your lips that can cause all my pain."
