When I heard this song a little while after it’s release, I found a new and interesting perspective on what it could be.
I know it is obviously about a break up and trying to get over it. But listen to the song after reading my theory.
Anyone who’s gone through drug or alcohol addiction knows how hard it is to beat. Listen to the lyrics carefully:
“I thought it was over, baby
We said our goodbyes
But I can't go a day without your face
Goin' through my mind”
She’s trying to quit her habit but she can’t help but remember and crave the escape it provides
“In fact, not a single minute
Passes without you in it
Your voice, your touch, memories of your love
Are with me all of the time”
She desperately wants to quit but the drug won’t let her forget the pleasure it always provided her.
“Let me let go, baby
Let me let go
If this is for the best, why are you still in my heart
Are you still in my soul, let me let go”
She is begging the drug to just let her go and stop controlling her life and mind. She knows quitting is the right thing but she can’t help but yearn for the love and companionship it gives her. She is pleading to please just let go of her and let her heal.
“I talked to you the other day
Looks like you made your escape
You put us behind, no matter how I try
I can't do the same”
She can’t quit no matter what and the only thing she can think of is how easy it is for the addiction to control people and she begs and prays that just let her go and she’ll be fine. She wants so bad to quit but she can’t because the drug won’t let her. In a nutshell, she is the drug when she’s on it and she’s trying to reason with her addict self to just let her go and leave her be. She can’t quit with the drug constantly nagging her to feed it.
“Let me let go, baby
Let me let go
It just isn't right, I've been two thousand miles
Down a dead-end road
Let me let go, darlin', won't you
I just gotta know, yeah
If this is for the best, why are you still in my heart
Are you still in my soul, let me let go”
How can something that feels so good be so bad? She doesn’t understand why she’s so in love with the drug.
“The lights of this strange city are shinin'
But they don't hold no fascination for me
I try to find the bright side, baby
But everywhere I look, everywhere I turn, you're all I see”
She cannot stop thinking about the drug and wants to quit but she can’t. Please god let this thing leave me alone so I can recover!
“Let me, let me let go baby, won't you
Let me let go
It just isn't right, I've been two thousand miles
Down a dead-end road
Oh, let me let go, darlin', won't you
I just gotta know
If this is for the best, why are you still in my heart
Yeah, you're still in my soul, let me let go
Let me let go, let me let go”
She’s gonna find a way to get this shit under control if she dies trying.
