I agree with a lot of the interpretations on this. I have always taken the “I can’t breathe underwater like I used to before I met you” prt to mean that he was broken by this. That before he met her (or whatever pronouns please you, this in my case is for me) he felt like he could do anything. That he was superhuman (metaphorically of course) and she humanized him. He now bleeds like every man. That he could submerge and never need to face reality, but not anymore. Now all he wants is her. Maybe a year has passed (Jan. Thru sept.) since they separated and it just felt like a wash. Uneventful and unimportant. Nothing makes sense anymore (collective memories in shambles) and nothing matters anymore (scruples in shambles). He’s throwing bricks at the moon while outside her window to me means he knows he wants her back but shouldn’t. Maybe she’ll notice him trying to destroy (again this is getting personal but I felt like he may have meant this too ) something she loves, the moon. But I like the general interpretation that you all have made that he wants her attention and just can’t do it right. Hmmm maybe hence, Doo right? You all have great interpretations and songs like this give my little broken heart a place to go. I wish I could hold her until the mountains turned into sand too, Honus.
