Lyric discussion by gedankenkapsel

This is my first comment on this page! And PPP is a very special song and Beach House a very special band to me, that was brought to me very randomly by one commentator on here in the comment section of a whole different song. I gave it a try and really fell in love with this song and the band. I visited a concert of them, which was so beautiful and haunting and listened to a lot of music of them during this year. I think PPP, Rough Song and Somewhere Tonight are my favorite tracks so far.

But now to my personal understanding of the song: To me this song is about falling in love with a very special person and starting to have a beautiful relationship. The first lines "I looked in your eyes And I asked, "Are you ready? Ready for this life?" Did you see it coming? It happened so fast The timing was perfect" really seem to hint at this.

But as it often is the case, it seems like one person (the protagonist) is feeling more connection to the other person and is more like the active and creative part of the relation. The protagonist believes that their connection may last forever, may overdo it, and is too obsessed with the love he feels. This to me is metaphorical meant by "Like tracing figure eights on ice in skates. And if this ice should break, it would be my My mistake". The protagonist gives himself the guilt of wanting an everlasting relationship. The figure eights metaphorically mean like longing for eternity or at least something that lasts a long time. He wants it so badly and has hopes in his heart: "It won't last forever Or maybe it will". He learnt in his life that this kind of love is something one needs to desire. Like a very high goal. : " Someone once told me In love, that you must Place all you're given In infinite trust".

But the other person is not able to reflect the same feelings the protagonist has. In his heart he is too worried or unable to love the same way as the protagonist does. This may be indicated by: "Between the cities Between the thrills There's something inside you That doesn't sleep well". They have great times when they meet, but there is something missing. Like not being able to really love the other person in the same way.

The melody of the song really transmits this battle between having hopes and simply breaking inside because of the feeling that it is not working the way the protagonist is longing for. He always asks himself: "Do I want it too much? Is it my fault".

This is my personal interpretation and kind of connected to the same feelings I go through with my almost Bf. Thanks for reading.
