I think this does a good job of discussing child abuse. But technically it's not about that, because there's no abuse to the child happening. The child is a witness to the verbal and physical abuse. But it's just as bad, because it's about a child living in darkness. There might be a technical term for it, I don't know. I'll call it second hand abuse. Their parent's are supposed to guide them and bring joy to them. But they are arguing, and yelling at each other. Which is not how a parent should be a role model to their kids.
And I don't think anyone's mentioned the second part. Which, might be the most important, actually. The child looks at the world and sees its darkness as well. How sad everyone is. But read this:
Just one spark of decency
Against a starless night
One glow of hope and dignity
A child can follow the light
Now what I can't tell here is if the child is the spark or someone else is the spark, but it's basically the same thing. Someone decided to bring joy to the community. Hope and dignity.
And that leads into the lines of the last part:
We're the ones who have to shine
We're the ones who draw the line
We're the ones who have to try
We're the ones who have to fly
We have to shine in order to bring the light to everyone else. Share the joy.
It's almost as if this is a lot like something else that was written a long time ago. (Matthew 5:14-16) But Ayn Rand forbid that a Rush lyric is similar to a Bible verse.
