I absolutely love this song. Fell in love with it in high school, this and Sayonara Suckers… I have a terrible memory for song chords but this one is always my go to for the uke….
Anyways I think this song is about falling in love with someone who wants more. That the love was real and beautiful but in the end it was small and required too much attention (from them). They want a bigger tree. Any you, the bonsai are happy with what you have.
Lyrics like the ones where he sings that she said it would be raining so he stayed inside drinking or that she said love is a bonsai tree and now he’s drawing them, makes me think that she was giving him hints to the fact she was unhappy but he took that incorrectly and instead tried to find comfort and beauty in the words instead of growing or fixing.
We had it all it was out oh my god below the stars… he thought they were perfect but in the end she had other views.
Some may love like a great red wood and some may love like a bonsai… still love but depends on who sees the beauty in which.
Maybe it’s just my break up that’s making me think this but this dude can write some beautiful songs.
