Lou Barlow wrote and sang the song. He suffers from social anxiety disorder and considers himself alcohol dependent. I couldn’t not find anything where he confesses to drug addiction, but given his profession it’s not too hard to draw the inference and correlation to that as well.
The song is about getting high (or drunk) and he confirms it several times in the lyrics. He talks about being alone to love how he likes it and whatever keeps him high. The b*llshit that the illicit drug users go on about is the “oneness” they feel with the universe when they are high. Barlow could be talking about that oneness “natural one” or he could simply be happier and feel more natural and comfortable when he is by himself based on his social anxiety disorder. I suspect the song was inspired by both his substance issue AND his social anxiety disorder.

Great tune. Great musician.
