Lyric discussion by PurpleHyacinth

I will be breaking each part down!! But before that I will express that I believe the song is about a multitude of things. First commitment issues, then self esteem problems. I think the narrator feels as if they will ruin the relationship and the person. I think they believe the relationship is rushed, they want to be ready for it and sometimes they think they are, but they’re always aware that they could ruin. That it’ll be their fault, I believe that it due to self esteem issues and the fearful avoidant attachment that they could have. I believe they think they are unloveable which is exactly why they will ruin the relationship.

Now on to why.

Out in the heartland I looked in your eyes And I asked, "Are you ready? Ready for this life?"

I think the first part it’s telling us is that this couple is that the most important part of their relationship. My guess is marriage. They’re clearly making sure their partner is ready for this, even though they probably don’t believe they are.

Did you see it coming? It happened so fast The timing was perfect Water on glass

I think this hints at the relationship going so fast. They believe it was the perfect situation and timing to happen. I think the water on glass is a reference to rain on windows how the you follow the droplet with your eyes and predict where it’ll go but then it goes the opposite way.

Like tracing figure eights on ice in skates Oh well And if this ice should break, it would be my My mistake

This stanza makes me think of the infinity sign, because of the 8. (Obviously.) I think the narrator believes that the relationship is going well, that the marriage will be successful, but they’re still worried they’ll ruin it, breaking the infinite love and trust between the couple.

Between the cities Between the thrills There's something inside you That doesn't sleep well

I think the narrator is telling us that between all the good times and peace there is always that unsettle feeling that the end of their relationship is coming soon.

It won't last forever Or maybe it will The white clothes they gave you You wear them so well

To me this makes me believe the thrills and good times is making the narrator hopeful, it could last forever despite the anxiety they bare. Now I interpreted the white clothes as two things. First relating back to the marriage, white is a coming color the bride or groom wears, however I also thought of purity. How pure and amazing this partner is, how good they are and they feel as if they’ll ruin that purity.

Someone once told me In love, that you must Place all you're given In infinite trust

This last stanza reminds me of getting love advice from someone. They’re being told to trust what they’re being told and given by this partner. To place it in infinite trust - it makes me think that they don’t believe their partner loves them. That they aren’t loveable.

There’s my interpretation of this story!! Bonus two character I feel relate to this song. (Geto and Gojo)
