I think of it as the perspective of someone who was in a bad place at some point and was raised up by this "you" in the song. The other person was doing the guy good in the beginning, but then they tried to sculpt them into someone that they didn't want to be in the line "headlong to overkill". The person that was "true" in the beginning started to hate the guy he helped and a feud started between them. The rest of the song rides off of that conflict.
