This is a breakup song. As someone who just went through a breakup myself I can tell you:

“It’s the cover I refuse to see / I didn’t want to see it / it didn’t look too good from here”

Is talking about the songwriter’s lover clearly not being a match for him in some way, down to personality or core values / morals / beliefs. Something he didn’t want to be, because his heart was already in it.

He wanted it to work because his heart was already in it. “I tried harder than you could know” to reconcile within himself, to cope with however she was hurting him. With whatever he disagreed with or wished wasn’t so.

But eventually it was “something I couldn’t ignore” eventually he gets angry at the breakup and blames her for for it, for the heartache that is SO PRESENT in the delivery and the arrangement.

Something that he couldn’t say to her (he probably did and that’s why they’re broken up) but he’s still bitter because why wouldn’t she just change for him? Why couldn’t she just be better? Why would she prioritize something cheap and dirty over the bond they built?

Why did she have to sap him like this, drive him crazy, drain his strength away?

I’d blame her too.
