This song is about the contrast between bona-fide true-hearted preachers like Billy Graham ("his hands tremble as he points it out") and con artists like Michael Warnke ("the man who says he was a satanic beast"). The truths and the lies are all so convincing... which is which? Who is really speaking for God? Both? Neither?

@ksandbergfl yeah, that's the only interpretation I've read here that actually makes sense.

It comes down to the question whom to trust, which is probably what is pondered in these lyrics.

Be it as it may โ€“ whom to trust in the end only matters if there's an eternity beyond this life; trusting (only) in the material realm is pointless as its end is thermal equilibriu, aka heat death of the universe. So you better place your bets on, or rather put your trust in, the One who created and surpasses it.
