Cover art for Please Eat lyrics by Nicole Dollanganger

The song tells us about a person with anorexia, from the point of view of a non-disordered person feeling guilt and sympathy for them; wanting to save them in a way. The repetition of “please eat” shows us that this person is trying to get the disordered person to eat, to restore themselves and their health before it’s too late. Every line or verse in the song is referencing to starving or anorexic tendencies throughout the entire song. “Sitting on a throne of bones, staring at that cold meal”, referencing to a disordered person refusing to eat and/or being repulsed by the food being displayed to the. Another thing I found in the verses was the transition from “You can only starve so much till you like how it feels”, to “You can only stare so much before you’ll die” referring to the eating disorder slowly getting worse as the song goes on. She goes through the lyrics mentioning how she does not like the body of the anorexic person as it killing them, but instead what’s “inside the shell,” referring to the personality that was once in the body until it became so disordered, they lost themselves.

Instead of sugar-coating the harsh reality of eating disorders, Nicole did not do that, and she presented to us a beautiful song about a sensitive, deadly topic.
