he is trying to help a friend who is in an abusive relationship getting out of it.
trying to defend his friend, but his friend keeps coming back to that relationship and that person. the lines could be him imploring the friend to see the reality of the situation and not to turn a blind eye anymore.
anyway that's my imagination.
@KarenZevon I agree. That is why in the last line he says theres nothing much to defend his own friend because he is fked up. At last. The only thing people can do is just try to improve themselves because do it for another is a big waste of time.
