If JT wasn't referring to comedien Steve Martin, it sure sounds like they were. Steve Martin's stand-up career started in the mid-'70's. In addition to the obvious line "but you're wrong, Steve..." there are some other references that sound like Steve Martin. "Lame-brained antics and his jumping in the air" does describe part of Martin's silly stand-up act. Morever, one of Martin's famous routines is making "balloon animals" and he makes a shape he calls "venereal disease" and says "if you see this on a toilet seat, don't sit down". JT sings "who the hell can he be when he's never had VD and he doesn't even sit on toilet seats". Maybe it's a coincidence, but if "Steve" is Steve Martin, the song fits.
