This song is about a likely-doomed romantic relationship between two people of the same sex. "Gabriel" has been comfortable with their sexuality for some time but has his own baggage, while the singer "Rick" has struggled with accepting themselves and valuing themselves.. They fall in love but can\'t act on their feelings due to the engrained belief that it is "not safe". \n\n"I try to remember a kiss and I only get sorrow"..\n\nThe singer is reevaluating their past given these "new" gay feelings for Gabriel. They are facepalming/cringing at how they unknowingly led on people and also mourning that they won\'t get to kiss those guys.\n\n"and yesterday\'s faded away\nnow there\'s only tomorrow\nand everything passes and changes\nand comes to an end i know\nbut nothing is written but old news\nagain and again"\n\nEven though they are more aware now, he repeats old patterns of toying with/pushing guys away in order to "protect" himself. There is part that wants to believe that their relationship is "real" and that he is "good enough" for more than just a roll in the hay, but an inner skeptic who only sees the bad, like Morrisey\'s "Yes I Am Blind", which is about a similar failed newbie relationship and what the newbie learns from it.\n\n\n"now i see a face in your eyes\nbut you don\'t remember my name\nwe\'re always a step out of time\nnow ain\'t that a shame\nand you\'ve been alone for too long\nand nobody cries\nif you want to see all of my tears\ntake a look in your eyes"\n\nIMO, both parties think that the other person has much higher self-esteem and fears being used/played/hurt. Both people put up false fronts due to indirect communication and assumptions. Gabriel has been single for a long time and Rick kind of feels bad about that, but deeper down he\'s sad that he was closeted against his will and has internalized homophobia that tells him that Gabriel is just using him.. The last line refers to the mix of love-and-hate, hope-and-regret, for how Rick has treated Gabriel. He realizes that he essentially sabotaged the relationship many times, only for Gabriel to forgive him... \n\ni know that it\'s true\n"believe it or not\nbut angels don\'t cry\ni know that it\'s true\nthere\'s too many tears\nbut angels don\'t cry"\n\nDeep down, he knows how he feels, even if he sometimes lies to himself. The difference between feeling love in your heart and denial in your throat. Basically his defense mechanisms are kicking in and they are strong.\n\n"i could walk away\nor i could walk on by\nor make it all come true\nor say it\'s all a lie\nthere\'s no more tears\nwhen you\'re out of time\nand i might fade away tonight\nif you close your eyes"\n\nThis is it. It\'s now or never. He can blow it off like it\'s nothing and "just friends" or actually make a move... Part of him acknowledges that it\'s a waste of time to cry when you have the opportunity to act, referring back to the first line of the song. He doesn\'t want to repeat the cycle.\n\nBut the last line reveals his heart: he still fears Rick ultimately rejecting him and ultimately having "tricked him" in a game that was "rigged from the start".
