I think the lyrics are deliberately ambiguous so he could be talking about his partner or Jesus. He sings about the red robe being worn down through the ages - clearly not about a partner. I always take the song about meeting Jesus in the countryside - "can you feel the light". \nCommon One i take to be about Jesus - he\'s also known as the son of man - clearly an ordinary man with nothing amazing to look at (hence common one) yet spiritually eternally divine.
