I've always thought that this song, at least the end of it, is about the Cold War/nuclear apocalypse.
'Big Bad Betty of the Apocalypse'
refers to the bombs themselves
'She opens her lips and it goes like this'
I think this refers to the blasts
'When The Golden Rule & the jungle meet'
the golden rule is to 'do unto others as you would want others to do unto you' which is a metaphor for mutually assured destruction. The jungle could be a lot of things, but I believe it's supposed to be Vietnam for no particular reason.
'There'll be nothing to love &
There'll be no one to beat'
when the world is destroyed, there'll be nothing left to love, and the other side isn't there for you to beat them, to be superior over them, because you've killed them.
'Oh the things we know
The things we don't
Oh the things we think we can will & won't'
I'm not sure the meaning of these lines
'We're loath to gather and nothing's left'
loath, not to be confused with loathe, means reluctant or unwilling. When the world ends, no one will want to pick up the pieces because they believe that nothing's left.
'We're all together & we're all bereft'
bereft means to be deprived of or lacking something. Everyone lacks the structure and society that existed before the apocalypse.
'Capitalists & Communists
You did the hokey pokey and it went like this'
Capitalists and Communists nuked each other, and the world then ended.
'You hate each other & you love yourselves'
referring to the hatred of communists by capitalists and the hatred of capitalists by communists, perpetuated by their home countries' propaganda.
'It might be Heaven & it might be Hell'
referring to the fact that neither side truly knows what the other side is like. It is presumed to be like hell due to the propaganda that everyone consumes, but it might be heaven.
'Oh the things we do
The things we say
Oh the things we wish we could wash away'
I do not know what this line refers to.
@big boy105 i believe the last line means that after the war where everythings destroyed we would all be wishing that what we did and said to cause this would be erased

"Shame on a martyr claiming friends from
Either perspective of &"
"Shame on a martyr claiming friends from

I think this refers to other countries choosing sides and getting destroyed in the cross fire.

"Words & Numbers
Sound & Silence"
"Words & Numbers
Sound & Silence"
Controversial. I see this as people hearing the news from Newspapers and radios

"Stop the peace & Keep the violence
No & Yes &"
"Stop the peace & Keep the violence
No & Yes &"
Referring to the government and the was in general, the choices made.

"We digress
It lives with Sad & Happiness"

And this is the peoples view...
And this is the peoples view on the war, which I really feel Vietnam's energy from.
Not doing all the lyrics, but you get the point. Lot's of this is reffering to the people who lived in the USSR and USA at the time, reacting and hearing about whats going on in the world.
