I am wondering if John Denver was referring to the Storms of November like 1913 in the Georgian Bay Ontario area of the Great Lakes, not Georgia Bay. It seems like this may be the case as the Storms of November are alluded to in Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" from 1975 as well.
