Cover art for Can You Feel My Heart? lyrics by Bring Me the Horizon

Here's what I feel.

The song "Can You Feel My Heart" by Bring Me the Horizon is a song representing the common inner turmoils of juvenile criminals influenced by the culture of alcohol, drugs, smoking, gambling and the like. These themes are presented through the song lyrics accompanied by a compelling melody.

The lyrics uses juxtaposition to bring about the idea of inner conflict within youth facing the same addicitions as the singer, who represents an anonymous youth estimated to be around his teenage years.

The first line, "Can you hear the silence", presents the idea of hearing nothing. The use of juxtaposition here shows how a teenager is trying to seek advice but receives nothing. It can also represent how the teenager is drowning in his own thoughts, unable to hear the outside world, his mother's ranting, his dog's barking and normal, everyday noises. "Silence" in this line represents the absence of sound rather than the presence of peace as the youth presented in this song is facing inner turmoil instead of finding inner peace. This could show how the world is silent and empty towards the teenager rather than the teenager being unwilling to hear the world.

The second line states "Can you see the dark", which is another use of juxtaposition in the song's lyrics. Although it is understood that light is needed for one to see, and darkness is the absence of light, the lyrics present this individual as trying to "see" even though there is nothing to see, or nothing to enable him to see. This could also mean his vision is blurred by the fog ahead. This can possibly be depicting his future if he continues with his addictions, and can also recognise how these youths are blindly following these bad examples and falling into the pit of depression.

The next line is "Can you fix the broken". Once an object is broken, it is understood that it is beyond repair and can no longer be fixed, yet this youth is trying to fix the broken despite it being impossible. This could present the youth's future too, which has been broken to the extent where it is unfixable.

These few lines present the idea of doing the impossible through the use of juxtaposition, yet it also shows that the teenager still has hope in doing so. It also appears that he is apparently talking to someone, asking him if he can "hear the silence... fix the broken". The person he is talking to will be explained later on in this analysis.

The last line is the most powerful of all. After all the juxtaposition being used, the lyrics goes on to describe feeling "my" heart as impossible, like all the previous situations in the first four lines of the song lyrics. The youth's heart is now unable to be contacted with. This can show, as the heart symbolises love and feelings, how the teenager is now emotionless, unable to feel love. It can also describe how the teenager is slowly dying, as the heart is considered one of the most important organs needed for survival. As it is now impossible to feel his heart, this can present him dying on the hospital bed, his heart slowly slowing, becoming numb and useless to him as his hearing and vision - both important senses - fade away, along with his character, which is broken, and his feels for emotion.

The next four lines consists of three questions, one of which was further elaborated in a separate line. It also uses juxtaposition, though now straight to the point and describing the teenager instead of abstract ideas.

The first line in this group, "Can you help the helpless", presents the idea of saving someone who is on the edge of dying already. This line is followed by the line "Well, I'm begging on my knees". The teenager is like a helpless soul who desparately needs help, yet cannot be helped.

The next line, "Well, I'm begging on my knees", breaks the sequence of questions that start with "Can you". It is also the first line in the first six lines of the lyrics that consists of a comma and a contraction. This shows the teenager is speaking slowly with someone. It can also be inferred that the person he is conversing with has a lot of patience to hear all of his inner thoughts he pours out one by one. The use of the contraction shows closeness between the teenager and the person he is talking to, which leads us to more ideas as to who he is having a conversation with. This closeness is also presented by the usage of "Well" and "I'm", which are rather casual expressions to use.

The third line is "Can you save my bastard soul". This again shows uses juxtaposition and also represents the closeness the teenager has with the person he is talking to. The usage of a rather rude word, "bastard", can show how close the teenager is to him.

The last line is "Will you wait for me", which shows how the person he is talking to is slowly losing patience with him, yet he is still desparate and needs someone to talk to. It can also represent how the world is moving so quickly, leaving him stranded and unsure of what to do next, helpless. This is backed by the first two lines of the seond group of lyrics.

These four lines shows how the teenager trusts this person in saving him, despited his wretched and apparently unfixable position. From the first eight lines, we can then infer so far that this teenager is on the brink of suicide and depression. He needs desperate help and has only one person to talk to, and even he, who was previously so patient, is starting to grow impatient. This shows the wrath of such addicted teenagers, specifically those who know what they have done were sins and wish to go back, yet is rendered unable to as a result of their current situation.

The next four lines show the teenager's relationships in life as simple, unlike what many happy teenagers have today, often having many friends and relatives. These lines also show how broken these relationships are as a result of the teenager's addictions.

The first line is "I'm sorry brother". It is a simple three words and contains a single contraction which represents his closeness to his brother. He places his brother first as it could be that his brother was also influenced by him and has already died due to depression. It could also be that his brother has died of other complications, and the last sight of this teenager was a depressed and addicted brother who no longer has emotions anymore.

The second line, "So sorry lover", shows that the teenager has actually been in a relationship before, and that he was a normal teenager who did attract someone to him. This also shows the extent of destruction drugs, gambling, smoking and alcohol had on the teenager. It has destroyed his love life and also his girlfriend. It is possible that his girlfriend was aggrieved at the teenager and have left him, yet has continued to receive prejudice as a result of the teenager's sinful acts, which makes him sorry for her.

The third line is "Forgive me father". This shows how his father was angry at the teenager for being such a let-down. His father, having raised him for all his life, had to see both his sons fall to these addictions. Although one can never be clear whether oneself is really blamed, the teenager still believes that his father blames him and begs for his forgiveness, showing how he knows his actions were sinful. It also shows how he accepts the blame to such extent.

The last line in this third group is "I love you mother". It could be that his mother no longer feels the teenager cared for her as a mother anymore, as he lacks the capability to feel and express emotion.

Thus, these four lines show how he has let down all four people he had ever come to know in his life. His friends had probably left him by now and nobody wants to be related to him except for those already dragged into the same hole. It is possible that his mother is the only one left alive, as the first three lines show how he is sorry and begs for forgiveness, whilst the last line states his love for his mother. It could be that his mother had migrated elsewhere, leaving him with the person he is currently talking to, and the teenager has no other way to express his love than to say it out loud when his emotions overflow. This also contributes to his depression and a possible cause for his suicidal thoughts.

The next group of lyrics are the same four lyrics as the first group with a reiteration of the fourth line (Can you feel my heart) three more times (making a total of four times it is sung). This reiteration represents he is already desprate and screaming for help again and again, yet receiving none.

The fifth group of lyrics consists of four lines repeated thrice. It shows massive contradicition within himself.

The first line is "I'm scared to get close and I hate being alone". The choice for "and" instead of "yet" shows how two contrasting things are happening at the same time, like two opposing forces slowly ripping him apart. He is afraid to get close, fearing the social consequences and all the critisicm he will receive, representing his personality type as more of an introvert. However, he does not like to be alone. This does not show his personality, but it shows that he has been alone ofr a long time and is already tired of it.

The second line, "I long for that feeling not to feel at all", represents the idea of suicide. When one does not feel anything at all, it can be inferred as death, as death is the absence of the human soul within the human body, thus it cannot feel anything without a body. It shows how badly he wishes to be euthanized. The fact that he wants to be killed painlessly shows how he wants a final moment that is painless, contrary to the constant pain he has been feeling all along.

The third line is "The higher I get, the lower I sink". The literal meaning could be taking drugs to get high, and it could also show external help trying to pull him up, but only resulting in his speedier death. The irony in this statement is that one can expect to recover well once one gets on the right tracks, yet this teenager sinks even lower despite getting help.

The fourth line, "I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim", shows how the teenager is being controlled by his addictions, as if they were demons. No matter how hard he tries to fight his addictions, they will always come back to him over time, similar to the image of demons drowning as they sink to the bottom of the river, yet slowly swimming up again and getting back to the shore.

These four lines show how the teenager is losing hope too. It also drops the conversation style of words, transforming instead into a narration styled sentence structure. It consists of contractions in each of the lines, which could also show that the teenager is now speaking through the singer to the song listeners, begging them to help others who still have hope, and prevent them from ending up in a simlar situation as his.

In conclusion, this song depicts a troubled teenager, both depressed and suicidal, looking for help in hopes of finally fighting his addiction, yet failing yet again. It could also be aimed to help spread awareness of underage gambling, smoking, drug intake and alcohol drinking. The use of juxtaposition also presents inner turmoil and massive contradiction with oneself. It is an extremely powerful song with deep meaning and warns teenagers not to follow in this virtual teenager's footsteps.
